Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly convened for a special session on Tuesday, beginning with a heartfelt resolution to mourn the 41 victims of the recent Karur stampede. The tragic incident occurred on the night of September 27 during a rally organized by actor Vijay’s political outfit, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). This session follows closely after the Supreme Court’s directive to transfer the investigation of the stampede from state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The assembly session, scheduled to conclude on October 17, will also see the tabling of the supplementary budget estimates. During the opening, all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), representing the ruling DMK, the opposition AIADMK, and the BJP, observed a two-minute silence in memory of those who perished.
The session also included moments of reflection for other notable figures. Speaker M. Appavu extended condolences for the passing of Tamil Nadu BJP leader and Governor of Nagaland, L. Ganesan, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Tamil Nadu IAS official Beela Venkatesan, and several former legislators.
Looking ahead, the supplementary budget estimates for the current fiscal year are expected to be presented on October 15. The assembly will then deliberate on these estimates on October 16, with Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu set to provide the concluding remarks on October 17.
While Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) remained silent in the House on Monday, anticipation is high for potentially heated discussions in the coming days. These discussions are expected to address the Karur tragedy and the broader political landscape leading up to the state assembly elections next year.
