In a landmark decision that reaffirms India’s foundational secular principles, the Supreme Court has paved the way for celebrated Booker Prize-winning author Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate the upcoming Mysuru Dasara festivities. The apex court dismissed a petition challenging the Karnataka government’s selection of Ms. Mushtaq for this esteemed role.
The legal challenge aimed to prevent the author from leading the inauguration ceremony on September 22 at the sacred Chamundeshwari temple. However, Justice Vikram Nath, delivering the court’s verdict, reminded the petitioners of the profound significance of the Indian Constitution’s Preamble.
“Look to the Preamble of the Constitution,” Justice Nath stated emphatically, highlighting its unwavering commitment to equality, fraternity, and secularism. This clear judicial directive unequivocally supported the state government’s prerogative to organize a culturally rich event that embraces the nation’s diverse fabric while adhering to its secular character.
This ruling not only guarantees that the ancient and revered Mysuru Dasara festival will proceed with a distinguished literary figure at its helm but also stands as a powerful testament to the Supreme Court’s dedication to upholding the inclusive spirit of India. Ms. Mushtaq’s inauguration is poised to be a symbol of the nation’s vibrant literary heritage and its enduring secular ideals.
