The Supreme Court on Thursday, October 16, 2025, dismissed the Telangana Government’s challenge against a High Court order. This High Court ruling had previously stayed a government directive that sought to provide a 42% reservation for Backward Classes in local bodies.
A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta upheld the Telangana High Court’s decision, specifically its order from October 9, which had placed an interim stay on the government order.
This interim stay was issued by the High Court while it considered several petitions. These petitions contested the State Government’s order from September 26, 2025, arguing that the proposed 42% quota for Backward Classes would push the total reservation in local bodies to an unconstitutional 67%. Petitioners highlighted that this increase breaches the 50% reservation ceiling established by previous Supreme Court verdicts. The High Court had given the state four weeks to file its official reply to these concerns.
