In a powerful statement of solidarity, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has addressed a letter to Amneet P Kumar, the wife of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who tragically passed away. Gandhi emphasized that Kumar’s death serves as a stark reminder of how “prejudiced and biased” attitudes within the corridors of power can deny even high-ranking officials the fundamental right to social justice.
Addressing the grieving bureaucrat directly, the Congress parliamentary party chairperson assured Amneet P Kumar that she, along with millions across the nation, stands firmly with her in her pursuit of justice.
Y Puran Kumar, a 52-year-old Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 2001 batch, was tragically discovered deceased at his Chandigarh Sector 11 home on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. His wife, a distinguished senior IAS officer, currently serves as the Commissioner and Secretary for the Haryana Government.
In her letter, dated Friday, October 10, 2025, Ms. Gandhi conveyed profound grief: “The news of the tragic death of your husband, senior IPS officer Mr. Y Puran Kumar, is both shocking and deeply saddening. My heartfelt condolences go out to you and your entire family during this period of immense sorrow.”
She continued by stating, “Mr. Y Puran Kumar’s untimely demise highlights a critical issue: even today, the prejudiced and biased actions of those in authority can deny even the most senior officials their rightful social justice. I, along with millions of our fellow citizens, stand united with you on this journey to seek justice.” Ms. Gandhi concluded with a prayer, “May the Almighty bestow upon you patience, courage, and strength to navigate this profoundly challenging time.”
In response to the tragedy, Chandigarh Police formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday, October 10, 2025, to thoroughly probe the circumstances surrounding the death. However, Kumar’s family has yet to authorize a post-mortem examination, with his wife raising serious questions about “incomplete information” present in the initial FIR.
Prior to his death, Kumar held the position of Inspector General at the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Rohtak’s Sunaria. He left behind a poignant, eight-page note identifying several senior officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya. The note meticulously detailed allegations of “mental harassment” and profound humiliation he endured over recent years.
Following these grave allegations, the Haryana government promptly transferred Mr. Bijarniya on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
