The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has stated that preliminary investigations into the death of the popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg do not indicate any foul play. The investigation, which commenced following Garg’s passing on September 19 before a scheduled concert, is anticipated to conclude within three months or longer.
“The SPF is aware of the speculation and false information circulating online regarding the circumstances of Mr Zubeen Garg’s death. The case is currently being investigated by the SPF, in accordance with Singapore’s Coroners Act 2010. Based on preliminary investigations, the SPF does not suspect foul play,” the official statement read.
Following Garg’s death, the Assam Police had arrested seven individuals, including the singer’s brother, on charges of murder. The SPF will submit its findings to the State Coroner in Singapore, who will then decide whether to conduct a Coroner’s Inquiry. The results of such an inquiry are made public upon completion.
As of October 1, the SPF had already shared its preliminary findings and Zubeen Garg’s autopsy report with the High Commission of India in Singapore. The police emphasized their commitment to a thorough and professional investigation, requesting patience and understanding from the public and urging against the spread of unverified information.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that the SIT’s report is expected by late November or early December. A team of Assam Police officers is scheduled to visit Singapore on October 21 to collaborate with the SPF on the case.
The legal proceedings related to the arrests in Assam are continuing, with five of the accused having been sent to judicial custody. A recent incident saw an attack on a police convoy transporting accused individuals, leading to injuries and subsequent arrests, underscoring the intense public interest surrounding the case.
