In Leh, a planned silent march by the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, aimed at advocating for statehood and constitutional safeguards, was thwarted on Saturday. Authorities cited law and order concerns, imposing strict security measures and suspending mobile internet services.
Meanwhile, Kargil experienced a peaceful silent march. Leaders from the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) condemned the restrictions in Leh but expressed satisfaction with the central government’s announcement of a judicial probe into the September 24 firing incident that resulted in casualties and injuries.
Officials in Leh reported the deployment of extensive police and paramilitary forces in anticipation of the march and a blackout protest. Prohibitory orders were enacted, and educational institutions were closed to maintain order.
Anjuman Imamia president Ashraf Ali Barcha, also a member of the Leh Apex Body, stated that the administration’s actions demonstrated its failure to address public demands. He emphasized the need for dialogue rather than imposing curbs.
Anjuman Moin ul Islam chief Abdul Qayoom mentioned that LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay was reportedly placed under house arrest. He urged the public to avoid the march venue due to the heavy security presence and stated that further actions would be decided collectively.
In Kargil, hundreds of participants, led by KDA co-chairmen Asgar Ali Karbalai and Sajjad Kargili, marched peacefully. Carrying placards and wearing black bands, they reiterated their demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status.
Addressing the gathering, Sajjad Kargili welcomed the judicial inquiry and called for the unconditional release of all detainees, including activist Sonam Wangchuk, and compensation for victims of the September 24 violence.
Asgar Ali Karbalai further condemned the restrictions in Leh, calling them unacceptable. He reiterated the welcome for the judicial inquiry and urged the government to take further steps like releasing detainees and providing compensation before resuming dialogue. He stressed that discussions should focus on statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh, emphasizing the people’s readiness for any sacrifice for their legitimate demands.
Karbalai also extended gratitude to the national civil society for their support and demanded action against those who allegedly defamed the people of Ladakh.
