Gangtok recently played host to the second successful edition of the “Sikkim Soldierthon,” a challenging hill half-marathon that attracted over 2,200 participants on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

The event was officially inaugurated at Paljor Stadium by Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retired), alongside Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, setting a vibrant tone for the day.

Under the inspiring theme of “Great Himalayan Connect,” the Soldierthon aimed to forge stronger ties between the Indian Army and the citizens of India, especially its youth. Beyond this crucial bond, it also served as a powerful initiative to boost fitness awareness and promote sports tourism within the breathtaking landscapes of Sikkim.

Runners had the option to participate in three distinct categories: a 5-km fun run, a 10-km challenge, and the demanding 21-km half-marathon. The diverse field included not just local enthusiasts but also dedicated soldiers from elite units such as the Sikkim Scouts, Ladakh Scouts, and Dogra Scouts, all running shoulder-to-shoulder.

The event was a collaborative effort, proudly hosted by the Eastern Command and Trishakti Corps in partnership with Raj Bhavan, Sikkim, and ‘Fitistan: Ek Fit Bharat’—a community-driven fitness application.

In recognition of their efforts, winners received attractive prizes, while every single participant was awarded an achiever’s medal and promotional items. Cash prizes, generously sponsored by the Sikkim Raj Bhavan, added to the excitement. The marathon concluded with lively cultural performances, infusing the atmosphere with an exhilarating and unforgettable energy.

Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur lauded the Soldierthon as a commendable step towards empowering the state’s youth, enhancing civil-military cooperation, and cultivating a sense of civic responsibility. He extended his heartfelt congratulations to all involved: the organizing committee, army officers, participants, and partner organizations for making the event such a resounding success.

Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, in his address, emphasized the deeper meaning of the run, stating, “Every stride taken here today is a profound tribute to the courage and sacrifices of our soldiers who vigilantly guard our borders. It is an honor to be part of this dynamic new initiative, fostering a ‘Fit India’ and reinforcing the vital connection between the Indian Army and our nation’s people.”

Adding to this sentiment, Lieutenant General Man Raj Singh Mann highlighted the unique aspect of the “Sikkim Soldierathon,” noting it provides an unparalleled opportunity for civilians to run alongside the brave soldiers who tirelessly protect our borders around the clock.
