Gangtok – The Sikkim government has formally communicated with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) regarding the persistent and frequent closures of NH-10. This crucial highway serves as a lifeline for the Himalayan state, and its repeated blockages are reportedly hindering the tourism sector, particularly during the busy peak season.
State officials have expressed that maintenance closures are often enacted for minor tasks and without adequate prior notification. This practice significantly complicates travel for the residents of Sikkim and detrimentally affects the tourism industry, which relies heavily on the unimpeded operation of NH-10.
“We are concerned by the noticeable increase in both the frequency and duration of road blockages and closures along NH-10 over the past year,” stated CS Rao, Additional Chief Secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, in a recent letter to NHIDCL General Manager Samrat Sanyal.
Rao further pointed out that recent closure notices for NH-10 were issued without proper coordination with tourism stakeholders and relevant government departments. This lack of coordination, he emphasized, had a significant negative impact, especially during the current peak tourist season.
The abrupt closures of the national highway, which connects Sikkim to the rest of the country, have not only reduced tourist arrivals but have also created serious implications for the livelihoods of those involved in the tourism sector.
The government has urged NHIDCL to cease implementing sudden closures of NH-10. They also recommended that any necessary maintenance or improvement work during peak tourist seasons should be avoided. If closures are unavoidable, they should not last for an entire day and must be communicated well in advance to all relevant departments and stakeholders.
Furthermore, Rao called for greater transparency and public awareness regarding road openings and closures. He stressed the importance of timely and clear communication through appropriate channels to keep the public informed about the status of NH-10.
In cases where closures are necessary, the government recommended establishing clearly marked diversion routes, supported by proper signage, traffic personnel, and public announcements to ensure smooth navigation for travelers.
The tourism department also proposed the development of a centralized digital platform or mobile application. This platform would provide real-time updates on road conditions, closure information, diversion details, and estimated restoration times, which would greatly assist tourists and tour operators in planning their journeys effectively.
Tourism stakeholders have consistently voiced their grievances regarding the ongoing obstructions, as these issues directly impact the overall tourism ecosystem within the state.
