In a notable development for Indian cricket, Shubman Gill has been officially appointed as the new captain for the One Day International (ODI) series against Australia, effective October 4, 2025. This marks a significant step for the 26-year-old, who now holds a formal leadership position across all three formats of the game, serving as captain for both Test and ODI teams, and vice-captain for the T20I squad.
Shreyas Iyer has been named as Gill’s vice-captain for this crucial series.

The announcement by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar comes swiftly after India’s dominant victory over West Indies in the first Test in Ahmedabad. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, prominent figures in Indian cricket, have been included in the ODI squad for the Australia series, marking their return to international action after a seven-month hiatus.
Following the three ODIs against Australia, their next opportunities to represent India will be in the home series against South Africa in November-December, and against New Zealand in January.
Selectors have opted to rest pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for the series, while young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has earned a recall to the squad.
Addressing the change in leadership, Ajit Agarkar stated, “Rohit Sharma has been informed about the change of captaincy. We don’t play too many ODIs, and we needed to give the next guy enough time to settle into the role.”
