A routine late-night inspection at a bar in Bengaluru’s Chandra Layout on Friday escalated dramatically when a police sub-inspector and a constable were reportedly subjected to a violent assault.
This disturbing incident unfolded amidst a broader crackdown by the West and South East Division Police, who have been conducting unannounced checks on bars, pubs, and the homes of known ‘rowdy sheeters’ (habitual offenders) since Friday evening.
Sub-inspector Ravish M. and his colleague Siddappa Gowda, along with other officers, were carrying out an inspection at a local bar and restaurant, specifically looking for illegal activities or violations. According to reports, a group of intoxicated individuals became irate when questioned by the police. They allegedly snatched the officers’ mobile phones, physically assaulted them, and then quickly fled the scene.
The assailants, who are currently evading arrest, have been charged under stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023. These include Section 132 (assaulting or using criminal force to obstruct a public servant from performing duties), Section 121 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to a public servant), and Section 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace).
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Girish S., confirmed that on Friday night alone, authorities inspected 222 residences of ‘rowdy sheeters’ and 148 bars. In a parallel operation, the South East Division Police conducted their own special drive, checking 119 homes of habitual offenders and performing drug tests to detect any narcotic influence.
