Great news for travelers! Shivamogga Airport is gearing up to introduce night landing services within the next three to four months, announced S.G. Nanjaiah Math, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC), on Wednesday.
During his visit to the Shivamogga airport, Mr. Nanjaiah Math shared with reporters that all necessary tender procedures for the remaining civil construction and equipment installation for night operations have been completed. Work is actively underway and is expected to finish promptly.
Beyond air travel, KSIIDC has ambitious plans to transform 111 acres of the airport’s 780-acre property into a vibrant commercial hub. This area will host hotels, shopping malls, and various other establishments, leased to private developers for 30 years, significantly enhancing passenger convenience and regional amenities.
The airport has seen a remarkable surge in passenger numbers since its inauguration. Starting with 17,000 passengers in its first year, it quickly grew to 92,000 in the second year, and has already served 1.1 lakh people this year. Currently, Shivamogga Airport offers flights to major cities like Bengaluru, Goa, Chennai, Tirupati, and Hyderabad, with plans for more routes in the pipeline.
Addressing concerns about delays in allocating plots to those who surrendered their land for the airport, Mr. Nanjaiah Math assured that he would personally take up the matter with the relevant officials.
Despite the airport’s successful launch in 2023, discontent is brewing among residents of Sogane and nearby villages. Having given up their land for the project, they are set to protest on Thursday, highlighting the government’s failure to deliver on promised land allocations.
