The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) celebrated a resounding victory in the Departmental Students’ Union (DSU) elections held at the University of Calicut campus on Friday, October 31, 2025.
This triumphant re-election came after a period of considerable controversy. The initial elections, conducted on October 10, were annulled by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran due to significant procedural irregularities. This cancellation followed a heated clash on campus between SFI activists and members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF).
In response to the annulment, SFI candidates took their case to the Kerala High Court. The court intervened, issuing a directive for the university to conclude the electoral process by October 31 and appointed a new returning officer to oversee the proceedings. Amidst these developments, the United Democratic Students’ Front (UDSF), an alliance comprising KSU and MSF, made the decision to boycott the re-election.
Election Results Confirmed
The re-election took place under a heavy police presence across the campus to ensure peace and order. When the votes were tallied, SFI candidates secured all nine general seats, winning by impressive margins of over 1,000 votes. Despite their boycott, UDSF candidates still managed to garner up to 340 votes in some contests.
The victorious SFI candidates include: T.V. Amardev (Chairman), P. Risvana Sherin (Vice-Chairperson), K. Sabah Thanveer (General Secretary), G. Gopika (Joint Secretary), K.J. Sreekala (Fine Arts Secretary), K.N. Noufal and P.U. Riju Krishnan (University Union Councillors), J. Nayana (Student Editor), and K.T. Hathif (General Captain).
