Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged followers to seek blessings by viewing the holy ‘Jore Sahib,’ the sacred footwear belonging to the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, and his consort, Mata Sahib Kaur. This follows the formal handover of these revered relics by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) at Gurudwara Moti Bagh in the nation’s capital.
These sacred items are set to embark on a spiritual journey, a ‘Guru Charan Yatra,’ destined for Takht Sri Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
“May the ‘Guru Charan Yatra’ deepen our connection with the noble ideals of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur ji. I appeal to the devotees in the areas from where this yatra would pass to come and have darshan of the holy ‘Jore Sahib’ (footwear),” PM Modi conveyed via X.
The ‘Jore Sahib’ have been preserved by Minister Puri’s family for three centuries. Upon their transfer to the DSGMC, the minister expressed a profound sense of humility.
“The holy ‘Jore Sahib’, ‘Charan Suhawa’ of the founder of Khalsa Panth, Dasam Pita Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, and his wife Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, have been with our family for over 300 years. Today, I feel humbled that my family will hand over the custody of the holy relics to Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee,” he shared in a post on X.
Minister Puri further elaborated that the sacred relics would journey via a “Guru Charan Yatra” and will ultimately find a permanent home at Takht Sri Patna Sahib, the birthplace of the tenth Sikh Guru, allowing devotees to pay their respects.
What are ‘Jore Sahib’?
- ‘Jore Sahib’ refers to the sacred pair of footwear belonging to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, and his wife, Mata Sahib Kaur, revered as the mother of the Khalsa.
- In the Punjabi language, “jore” signifies a pair, while “sahib” is a term of deep respect, making these relics highly treasured within Sikhism.
- These footwear are seen as a tangible link to the Gurus, believed to instill qualities of courage, righteousness, and justice in those who venerate them.
The ‘Guru Charan Yatra’ Schedule
The journey of the sacred footwear will commence from Delhi, proceeding to Patna through a Nagar Kirtan (a ceremonial procession). The yatra is scheduled to begin on October 23 from Gurdwara Moti Bagh and will conclude on November 1, culminating at its final destination, Takht Sri Patna Sahib.
