The alleged misappropriation of gold at the sacred Sabarimala temple has ignited a fierce controversy, yet the influential Nair Service Society (NSS) is noticeably holding its tongue. This silence marks a significant departure from its usual outspoken stance on issues affecting the Hindu community.
NSS General Secretary G. Sukumaran Nair addressed reporters on Tuesday, explaining that the ongoing investigation into the gold allegations is under the close watch of both the courts and the State government. He stressed that this intense scrutiny leaves no room for the organization to issue premature comments. Nair firmly stated, “Everyone responsible for the disappearance of the gold plates must be identified and punished without mercy.”
This cautious approach by the NSS leadership is particularly noteworthy given that the organization itself is grappling with internal disagreements at the grassroots level. These tensions arose after its public endorsement of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s Global Ayyappa meet held in Pampa last month.
To tackle these internal issues, the NSS had initially planned a crucial meeting of its union-level presidents and secretaries for the previous Saturday. However, this meeting was unexpectedly called off at the last minute – an almost unprecedented event for the community organization.
Sources within the NSS suggest that the current political storm surrounding the Sabarimala issue is largely fueled by partisan interests rather than genuine concern. They also revealed that the NSS has received assurances from the LDF government regarding decisive action on the matter before the upcoming local body elections.
One source emphasized the delicate balance at play: “It’s crucial for both the government and the judiciary to resolve this before it becomes entirely dominated by political narratives. Commenting prematurely risks turning a serious investigation into a mere political statement.”
