There’s no denying it: Rory McIlroy is a living legend in the world of golf. As one of only six players ever to achieve the coveted ‘career Grand Slam’ — winning all four major championships — and the sole European to do so, the Irishman has cemented his place as arguably the greatest European golfer of all time, and certainly one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Yet, despite his immense accomplishments, including being the current Masters champion and World No. 2, McIlroy still approaches new experiences and challenges with genuine enthusiasm. His latest adventure brings him to India for the very first time, where he’ll compete in the DP World India Championships, kicking off this Thursday at the iconic Delhi Golf Club.
Expressing his anticipation during his first media interaction in the city, McIlroy shared, “India is a country I’ve longed to visit. It’s incredibly vibrant, and I’m thrilled to play on a course I’ve never experienced before. To find new challenges 18 years into my professional career is truly exhilarating. I’ve followed tournaments played here over the years, and I can confirm, the Delhi Golf Club definitely lives up to its celebrated reputation.”
Strategy is Key: Smart Play at the DGC
McIlroy readily endorsed the widespread belief that a smart, patient approach will be crucial on the DGC’s demanding fairways. Even for a golfer renowned for his powerful drives, he conceded, “I don’t think I’ll even touch my driver this week. The risk simply isn’t worth the potential reward. Straying off course means landing in dense jungle, from which recovery is almost impossible. You could easily rack up a huge score very quickly. So, being strategic and intelligent with your shots, particularly off the tee, is absolutely vital.”
As the current leader in the Race to Dubai (the path to the season-ending Finals), McIlroy is set to play alongside his esteemed Ryder Cup-winning teammate, Viktor Hovland, and two-time PGA Tour winner, Ben Griffin, during the initial two days of the championship. It promises to be an exciting grouping!
Beyond the golf course, McIlroy revealed an equally fervent desire to immerse himself in India’s beloved sport: cricket. “I’d absolutely love to catch a cricket match,” he mused. “I don’t think there’s anything scheduled until perhaps next month, but I’d certainly love to return for that. I really enjoy watching Test matches. In fact, I’ll be in Australia later this year when The Ashes are on, and that’s something I’m genuinely looking forward to.”
His aspirations for India extend beyond sports. “Of course, the Taj Mahal is a must-see,” he added, envisioning a future visit with his family to experience its grandeur. “There’s just so much to explore in this vast country.” McIlroy also mentioned the renowned DLF Golf Course, home to the Indian Open, as another destination on his golfing wish list. “I’d love to play the DLF. It’s gained a legendary status globally, particularly with its challenging bunkering and that infamous 17th hole, which seems like a real monster. I hope to get the chance to play it someday.”
