Kerala is currently facing a significant agricultural challenge, with many fertile lands left uncultivated. However, a promising movement is emerging in central Travancore, signalling a potential turnaround for the state’s farming sector.
The TIES Farmer Producer Company (TIES FPC), an initiative backed by the Pampady-based Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) and supported by NABARD, has unveiled an ambitious strategy to rejuvenate these neglected lands. Their approach involves leasing farmland from interested owners and cultivating crops specifically chosen to thrive in each area’s unique soil and climate conditions.
At its core, this project is dedicated to growing pure, toxin-free food. This fresh produce, along with innovative value-added products, will be readily available to consumers through online channels and local stores.
Landowners Become Valued Partners
Punnen Kurian Vengadath, Secretary of TIES, elaborates on the model: ‘Landowners will be invited to become shareholders in our company. TIES FPC will enter into long-term legal agreements to lease their land. Our team of experts will handle every aspect, from planting to harvesting, using certified organic practices to maximize yields. This means landowners can reap the benefits without the daily operational burdens.’
Embracing Modern Technology for Smart Farming
Future farming at TIES FPC will be remarkably advanced, leveraging up to 99% mechanization and an AI-driven software system. This intelligent system will integrate scientific agricultural data with real-time weather insights. For complete peace of mind, field cameras will be deployed across all cultivation sites, enabling landowners to observe their farms remotely and in real-time.
Introducing Agri-Tourism
Beyond cultivation, TIES FPC aims to offer unique agri-tourism experiences, notably a ‘farm gymnasium’ where visitors can combine physical activity with the tranquil routines of farm life. Initially, the company will launch its operations in the Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts, with ambitious plans to expand across all of Kerala within the next five years.
The company’s grand inauguration is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. at Nalumanikkattu, Manarcad, with Agriculture Minister P. Prasad officiating. Roy Paul, the company’s Chairman, will preside over the event, joined by Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan and other distinguished guests.
