After a remarkable journey to their maiden Ranji Trophy final last season, Kerala enters the new season burdened with the high expectations of repeating that success. However, their opening match on Wednesday presents a unique challenge.
The biggest match-winner in Kerala’s cricketing history, Jalaj Saxena, has made a significant move, switching his allegiance to Maharashtra. This means Kerala will face their former ace in the season opener at the Sports Hub, Greenfield Stadium, forcing a tactical rethink for the home side.

Saxena was instrumental in crafting Kerala’s home victories on tailor-made pitches. Now, with him in the opposition, Kerala must devise a new strategy. Maharashtra boasts a formidable lineup with explosive batters like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Prithvi Shaw, alongside captain Ankit Bawne, who all pose a significant threat to Kerala’s bowlers. The pace attack, featuring Mukesh Choudhary and Kerala’s past nemesis Rajneesh Gurbani, could prove exceptionally challenging if conditions favor seam bowling.

For Kerala, the return of Sanju Samson is a massive boost. Having missed last season’s historic run, Samson is eager to make a memorable comeback. Skipper Mohammed Azharuddeen, who has taken over from Sachin Baby, will lead an experienced middle-order featuring Salman Nizar, B. Aparajith, and Sachin Baby – a key strength for the team this season.
The home side will also rely on significant contributions from their two guest stars: Aparajith, now elevated to vice-captain, and all-rounder Ankit Sharma, who faces the daunting task of stepping into Saxena’s shoes.
In the bowling department, the promising Eden Apple Tom is set to spearhead the attack in the absence of Basil Thampi, with N.P. Basil providing crucial support. With intermittent rain over the past few days and more showers forecast, both teams are anxiously hoping that the weather doesn’t spoil the highly anticipated contest.
