Following a night marked by thunderstorms and impressive lightning displays, Chennai and its neighboring districts are once again preparing for more rain. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a forecast for light to moderate rainfall across isolated areas of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, and Ranipet districts, expecting these showers to continue until at least 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
While Chennai city itself saw a dry Monday during daylight hours, the early hours of Tuesday brought significant rainfall to many parts. Data from the RMC highlights the intensity, with Nungambakkam recording 42.8 mm of rain, Meenambakkam receiving 10.9 mm, Ennore Port registering 14.5 mm, Mamallapuram experiencing 11 mm, and VIT Chennai reporting 17.5 mm of precipitation between Sunday 8:30 a.m. and Monday 5:30 a.m.
The wet conditions weren’t limited to Chennai. Several other locations also reported substantial rainfall. Notably, Virinjipuram KVK in Vellore saw 47 mm, Hindustan University 46 mm, NIOT Pallikaranai 34.3 mm, Tambaram 45 mm, Puzhal 25.5 mm, Nandanam 25 mm, and Anna University 22 mm. In Tiruvallur district, Villivakkam recorded 24.5 mm and R.K. Pet 13.5 mm. Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai received 14.5 mm, Poonamallee 12 mm, and ACS Medical College 10.5 mm.
This extended period of wet weather, which the RMC had initially predicted to last until Thursday, September 18, is attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation currently positioned over the southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated on further weather advisories.
