Vijayawada witnessed a vibrant demonstration of commitment to cleanliness as officers from the South Central Railway (SCR) organized a public walkathon on Friday. This event was a key part of the ongoing ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (Cleanliness is Service) initiative, designed to foster a greater sense of responsibility among railway employees, passengers, and the wider community.
Leading the charge was Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Mohit Sonakiya, who officially launched the walkathon from the iconic Clock Tower Centre. During his address, Mr. Sonakiya passionately emphasized the critical need for maintaining superior hygiene and sanitation standards across all railway stations.
He elaborated on the extensive efforts underway, stating, ‘We are actively conducting special cleanliness drives, meticulously cleaning platforms, restrooms, railway tracks, and waiting areas. We earnestly appeal to all passengers to utilize bio-toilets, refrain from open defecation, and actively contribute to maintaining a spotless environment.’
The SCR’s dedication extends beyond just physical cleaning; they are also heavily invested in educational campaigns. These programs are specifically designed to enlighten passengers about proper waste disposal techniques and highlight the detrimental effects of plastic usage. Furthermore, all railway staff and contractors have received strict directives to ensure the prompt and efficient collection of garbage.
The walkathon saw enthusiastic participation from various dignitaries, including Additional DRM (Operations) Srinivasa Rao Konda, alongside students from Kendriya Vidyalaya and Jack and Jill School, and numerous officers from diverse departments within the SCR, all uniting for a cleaner railway system.
