A shocking incident unfolded on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, when BJP MLA Manoj Kumar Oraon was reportedly assaulted by workers affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Alipurduar. The alleged attack occurred as Oraon and his team were distributing much-needed flood relief supplies, coming just one day after a similar assault on two other senior BJP leaders in the neighboring Jalpaiguri district.
Oraon sustained injuries in the confrontation and was later hospitalized. From his hospital bed, he recounted the ordeal, stating, “While trying to help flood-hit people, I was suddenly surrounded and attacked. This is the tragic state of democracy under the TMC.”
The Trinamool Congress, however, vehemently denied these accusations, labeling them as “baseless.” A local TMC leader countered, claiming it was Oraon who initiated the violence by assaulting an elderly man in the area.
The West Bengal unit of the BJP swiftly condemned the incident, denouncing it as an act of “terror politics” orchestrated by the ruling TMC. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the party asserted, “Whenever we stand beside flood-hit people in North Bengal, the TMC unleashes its rampage! In Mamata Banerjee’s rule, even showing solidarity with people in distress has become a crime! BJP MLA Manoj Kumar Oraon, party workers, and central forces were attacked.” The BJP also shared a video clip of the alleged attack, though its authenticity remains unverified by independent sources.
The BJP further criticized the TMC, stating, “The TMC does not understand the language of humanity; it only understands the politics of terror. While the people of North Bengal await help amid the devastation caused by floods, the TMC remains busy spreading fear and violence. Trinamool’s politics means nothing but hooliganism, lies, and hatred.” Accompanying this post were visuals reportedly showing the injured MLA being transported to the hospital and several damaged vehicles.
This latest event follows closely on the heels of another attack on Monday, October 6, 2025, when BJP MP Khagen Murmu and Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh were injured during relief distribution in Jalpaiguri district’s Nagrakata area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also previously condemned the attacks on BJP members involved in flood relief, criticizing the TMC regime’s “pathetic” law and order situation. In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Prime Minister of “politicizing a natural disaster.”
The broader region of North Bengal, encompassing Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Darjeeling, is currently grappling with severe floods and landslides, which have claimed at least 30 lives and left many others missing after a week of torrential rains.
