Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed his welcome for the liberation of Israeli hostages from Gaza. He also commended U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives, describing them as “unwavering,” and acknowledged the “strong resolve” shown by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
PM Modi emphasized that India supports President Trump’s earnest endeavors to foster peace in the region.
“We welcome the release of all hostages after over two years of captivity. Their freedom stands as a tribute to the courage of their families, the unwavering peace efforts of President Trump and the strong resolve of Prime Minister Netanyahu. We support President Trump’s sincere efforts to bring peace to the region,” PM Modi stated on X.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas announced on Monday the release of the remaining 20 Israeli hostages. This development potentially marks an end to the conflict in Gaza that escalated following Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
The Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, predominantly civilians. A total of 251 hostages were taken to Gaza by Hamas militants.
On October 9, Donald Trump had announced that an agreement had been reached between Israel and Hamas for the initial phase of a plan to halt the fighting in Gaza and secure the release of hostages and prisoners.
This announcement came after several days of discussions involving Hamas, Israel, and other key parties, which took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, an Egyptian resort city.
