Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in extensive discussions with his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, on Thursday, October 9, 2025, in Mumbai. Their talks primarily centered on strengthening the robust India-UK relationship across critical sectors such as trade, defense, security, and advanced technology.
The British leader arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday for a two-day visit, leading a significant delegation comprising 125 prominent UK business leaders, entrepreneurs, and educationists. Starmer’s visit to India follows the signing of a landmark free trade pact two-and-a-half months prior, an agreement designed to enhance market access, reduce tariffs, and potentially double bilateral trade by 2030.
This crucial trade pact was solidified during PM Modi’s visit to London in July. Speaking on Wednesday, Mr. Starmer emphasized the deal’s pivotal role, describing it as a “launchpad” for mutual economic expansion, especially as India is projected to become the world’s third-largest global economy by 2028.
“We signed a major trade deal with India in July — the best secured by any country — but the story doesn’t stop there,” Starmer stated. “It’s not just a piece of paper; it’s a launchpad for growth. With India poised to be the third biggest economy in the world by 2028, and trade becoming quicker and cheaper, the opportunities waiting to be seized are unparalleled.”
During these significant talks, the Indian delegation also brought up concerns regarding the activities of certain pro-Khalistan elements operating from British soil. Additionally, India reiterated its call for the extradition of several high-profile billionaire fugitives, including Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, from the UK.
