During a summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly commended U.S. President Donald Trump for his efforts in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Sharif stated that Trump’s actions saved millions of lives in South Asia by preventing a potential war and securing a ceasefire.
Sharif, addressing leaders from the Middle East and beyond, described Trump as a “man of peace” and announced his support for the U.S. President’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. He specifically mentioned Pakistan’s nomination of Trump for his “outstanding, extraordinary contribution” in stopping the conflict between India and Pakistan.
While Trump has previously claimed to have brokered a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed nations during a conflict in May, India has reportedly denied any mediation efforts by the U.S. President in that instance.
The Pakistani Prime Minister further elaborated, suggesting that Trump’s intervention not only brought peace to South Asia but also prevented a conflict that could have escalated with devastating consequences. Sharif drew parallels between the situation in South Asia and the ongoing efforts for peace in Gaza, stating that achieving peace there also saves millions of lives.
Sharif’s remarks followed a similar sentiment expressed by Israel, which had also backed Trump for the peace prize. The Prime Minister characterized Trump as “the most genuine candidate” for peace and “the man the world needed the most” at this critical juncture. He concluded by suggesting that Trump would be remembered as a leader who went to extraordinary lengths to end conflicts.
The summit itself was focused on supporting the ceasefire in Gaza, ending the Israel-Hamas war, and fostering a long-term strategy for the reconstruction of the Palestinian territory.
