A horrifying scene unfolded at Mahabubabad Government Hospital on the evening of September 21st, as a large crowd allegedly assaulted medical staff and the hospital superintendent after a patient tragically passed away.
The deceased, identified as Shaheda Begum, had been admitted around 8:30 PM on September 21st. Hospital authorities reported that she was in a critical state due to severe diabetic ketoacidosis, with a dangerously high blood sugar level of 700 mg/dl, disorientation, and extreme respiratory distress, her oxygen saturation plummeting to 60%. Despite all efforts to provide necessary treatment, Ms. Begum suffered a cardiac arrest and tragically died at 10:00 PM. Dr. B. Srinivasa Rao, the hospital superintendent, confirmed that resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Immediately after her passing, a crowd of approximately 50 to 60 individuals reportedly forced their way into the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, accusing the medical team of negligence. This initial confrontation quickly spiraled into a violent attack on the doctors. The enraged mob then proceeded to Dr. Srinivasa Rao’s office, where they physically assaulted him. The superintendent experienced acute distress, including palpitations and profuse sweating, necessitating his own transfer to the ICU for medical attention.
Law enforcement officers stationed at the hospital outpost intervened to de-escalate the volatile situation, eventually calling for additional police support to disperse the agitated crowd. The hospital administration has since filed a formal complaint with the Mahabubabad Town police, seeking justice for the assaulted staff.
In the wake of this alarming event, numerous medical organizations, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Telangana chapter, the Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association (TTGDA), and the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA), have vehemently condemned the assaults. They are calling upon authorities to take swift and stringent legal action against the perpetrators and to implement measures that guarantee the safety and security of medical professionals across the region.
