Operation Sindoor, a significant four-day military confrontation with Pakistan in May, saw remarkable acts of bravery from Indian forces. Recent details from official citations shed light on the intricate planning and execution of these operations, highlighting the courage of the personnel involved.

Group Captain Ranjeet Singh Sidhu, commanding a Rafale squadron, was honored with the Vir Chakra for his exceptional leadership. He led multiple deep-penetration strike missions and provided crucial air defense support, ensuring the success of operations despite facing complex threats and layered air defenses. His citations note his unwavering dedication and disregard for personal safety in a high-stakes combat environment.

Sidhu was among 15 Indian soldiers and security personnel who received the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime honor, presented by President Droupadi Murmu. These awards recognize their pivotal role in striking terror and military targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during the May 7-10 engagement, which was a direct response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Other notable citations include:

  • Group Captain Manish Arora: Commended for leading an unescorted strike package, his ‘audacious and aggressive maneuvering’ reportedly caused tactical chaos among Pakistani forces. He operated under seamless radar cover and faced constant threats from enemy aircraft and advanced weaponry.
  • Group Captain Animesh Patni: Honored for commanding a surface-to-air missile squadron, he was recognized for his precise guidance and innovative solutions that inflicted significant losses on adversaries while safeguarding his own equipment, even under intense fire.
  • Group Captain Kunal Kalra: Despite facing aircraft unserviceability and adverse weather, Kalra successfully neutralized two targets. He demonstrated remarkable composure, executing remedial actions to ensure weapon system functionality and the safety of his wingmen.

The article also mentions other Vir Chakra recipients, including Wing Commander Joy Chandra, Squadron Leader Sarthak Kumar, Squadron Leader Siddhant Singh, and Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik, detailing their specific contributions to mission success under challenging conditions. The citations underscore the high level of airmanship, tactical acumen, and bravery displayed by these officers.

Beyond the Vir Chakras, a total of 127 gallantry medals and 40 distinguished service awards were conferred, including Kirti Chakras, Shaurya Chakras, and various Sena and Vayu Sena medals, reflecting the widespread recognition of commendable service during this period.
