Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has publicly called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the critical need to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah expressed significant disappointment, noting that the Centre’s promise to reinstate full statehood to the region has not yet materialized, despite earlier hopes for its completion within his government’s first year in office.
Addressing a press conference, Abdullah stated, “We were hopeful that the Centre would fulfill its promise to restore statehood [to J&K] in the first year of our government, but it has not happened. I request the Prime Minister and his team to deliver on the promise made to our people by restoring statehood.”
He highlighted that his National Conference government, which recently marked its first year, remains steadfast in its electoral pledges. “When we sought votes from the people, it was for a full five-year term, not just one year. While questions may be arising now, I urge everyone to direct those questions after the completion of five years,” Abdullah added. He also pointed out that his administration has actively pursued the restoration of statehood, including bringing forward a resolution on the matter. The Chief Minister reiterated his government’s dedication to improving the lives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and fulfilling all commitments made during last year’s elections.
