Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently highlighted the urgent necessity for peace across the Union Territory (UT), stressing that the responsibility for maintaining security rests firmly with the appointed authorities, not the elected government.
Speaking in Srinagar after unveiling the special ‘Peace Jersey’ for Real Kashmir FC, Mr. Abdullah stated, “Maintaining peace is the responsibility of the authorities tasked with it, not his government, and those responsible should fulfil it.” This statement served as an implicit message to the J&K Lieutenant-Governor, who oversees the UT’s security apparatus.
Mr. Abdullah reiterated that peace forms the bedrock for progress in development, tourism, and sports. “Peace is a must. For instance, regarding the day-night football match that was discussed – if the environment isn’t secure, who will come to play in the evening? Peace is fundamental for everything,” he remarked.
Discussing the new jersey, Mr. Abdullah explained, “The jersey’s design pays homage to Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage and its people’s aspirations. Inspired by the iconic Hari Parbat Fort – a powerful symbol of communal harmony housing a shrine, a temple, and a gurdwara – the kit features a calming sky-blue base, representing peace.”
He further added that the government remains dedicated to bolstering sports infrastructure throughout Jammu and Kashmir. “Sports act as a vital bridge for peace. Ensuring this continuity is a collective responsibility that must be met by all involved parties,” he concluded.
