In a proud moment for the nation, Olympic gold medalist and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was formally conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, presiding over the ceremony, lauded Chopra as an ‘epitome’ of perseverance and a symbol of national pride.

The prestigious pipping ceremony, held in New Delhi, saw Minister Singh personally bestow the insignia upon the celebrated athlete. The event was also attended by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and numerous other high-ranking officials from the Indian Army, highlighting the significance of this recognition.

Chopra’s journey with the Indian Army began on August 26, 2016, when he joined as a Naib Subedar. His dedication and achievements led to his promotion to Subedar in 2021, and then to Subedar Major in 2022.

Hailing from Khandra village in Panipat, Haryana, where he was born on December 24, 1997, Neeraj Chopra etched his name in history books at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He secured India’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in athletics, dominating the men’s javelin throw competition with an unforgettable performance.

His remarkable streak continued with a silver medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024, followed by another triumphant gold at the World Athletics Championships in 2023, solidifying his status as a global athletics icon.

Beyond the Olympics and World Championships, Chopra has consistently delivered stellar results, claiming multiple gold medals at prestigious events like the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and various Diamond League meetings. His personal best throw of 90.23 meters, recorded in 2025, marks a significant milestone in Indian sports.

During his interaction with Chopra and his family, Defence Minister Singh reiterated his admiration, calling the javelin ace an ‘epitome of perseverance, patriotism, and the unwavering Indian spirit of striving for excellence.’

Minister Singh further added, ‘Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) Neeraj Chopra truly embodies the highest ideals of discipline, unwavering dedication, and profound national pride. He serves as an enduring inspiration for generations, not only within the sporting community but also across our esteemed Armed Forces.’

This honorary commission in the Territorial Army was officially granted by President Droupadi Murmu on April 16, a testament to his exceptional achievements and exemplary service to the nation, as confirmed by the Defence Ministry.

Chopra’s impressive list of accolades also includes prestigious civilian and military honors such as the Padma Shri, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
