Odisha on High Alert: Heavy Rains Expected as Bay of Bengal Depression Nears Coast; Chief Minister Oversees Preparedness

The Odisha government moved swiftly on Friday, September 26, 2025, to implement comprehensive measures in anticipation of a developing depression over the Bay of Bengal. This weather system is forecast to cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast, specifically between Puri and Kalingapatnam near Gopalpur, by Saturday morning, September 27, 2025.

According to an 8:13 p.m. bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is tracking west-northwestwards.

In neighboring Andhra Pradesh, Home Minister V. Anitha has issued directives for officials to maintain full readiness. Her orders include the immediate establishment of control rooms, the installation of crucial warning boards, and the preparation for deployment of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and fire services.

Further inland, heavy rainfall has already compelled authorities in Hyderabad to open the gates of its two main reservoirs, Himayatsagar and Osman Sagar. Following this, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has evacuated 55 residents from low-lying, flood-vulnerable areas near Chaderghat Bridge.
