The Odisha Government has issued a comprehensive alert to all its districts, anticipating heavy rainfall due to a strengthening low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Officials confirmed this on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
According to a bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a well-marked low-pressure system is currently situated over the west-central Bay of Bengal. This system is projected to track northwestwards, intensifying into a depression by the morning of October 2. It is then expected to further develop into a deep depression and cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts in the early hours of October 3.
In response, the State Government has instructed all district Collectors to ensure that personnel and equipment are ready to manage potential emergencies, including severe waterlogging, sudden flash floods, landslides, and other related impacts.
The IMD’s alert indicates light to moderate rainfall across 25 of the State’s 30 districts for Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Additionally, isolated heavy rain, ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm, is specifically predicted for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur districts.
Looking ahead to October 2, all 30 districts of Odisha are expected to experience rainfall. Moderate to heavy rainfall (7 cm to 20 cm) is particularly likely in isolated areas of Kandhamal, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Other districts, including Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar, could see 7 cm to 11 cm of rain.
A critical advisory has been issued to fishermen, urging them to stay clear of the sea along and off the Odisha coast between October 1 and October 4. Meanwhile, IMD scientist U.S. Das noted in a post on X that the annual monsoon season officially concluded on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
