Odisha is on high alert as a cyclonic storm brews in the Bay of Bengal, with forecasts indicating heavy rainfall across the state starting October 27. Although the cyclone is not expected to make a direct landfall, it is predicted to bring widespread downpours and gusty winds to the region.
Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has assured the public that the state is well-prepared for the impending storm, which is anticipated to reach the coast around October 22nd or 29th. Key departments, including Health, Water Resources, Energy, and Agriculture, are reported to be fully prepared. Local administrations in vulnerable areas have made arrangements for relief centers, evacuations, and essential supplies, emphasizing that there is no need for panic.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a depression by October 25, a deep depression by October 26, and a full cyclonic storm by October 27. The storm is likely to move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, but Odisha’s coastal and southern districts are expected to experience significant rainfall from October 27 to October 29. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the entire state, with some areas anticipating extremely heavy rainfall.
Squally weather, with wind speeds ranging from 40-50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph, is anticipated along the south Odisha coast from October 27. IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty confirmed the formation of the low-pressure system and its expected intensification. She specifically warned fishermen against venturing into the sea from October 26 onwards.
In response to the cyclone alert, fishing activities in Thoothukudi have been suspended. Authorities have advised fishing boats at sea to return to shore immediately and have instructed docked boats to remain moored. Residents in coastal areas are urged to stay away from the shoreline and to closely monitor weather updates and warnings issued by the IMD.
