In a significant political development for Northeast India, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma (representing the National People’s Party – NPP), Tipra Motha’s Pradyot Manikya, and former BJP spokesperson M. Kikon jointly unveiled plans for a powerful new regional political entity. This alliance emerges even as both the NPP and Tipra Motha currently maintain ties as allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
During a press conference addressing the media about this new political endeavor, Mr. Sangma highlighted the collaborative spirit driving the initiative. “We have made a collective decision to work together and forge a distinct political identity for the Northeast region,” he stated. He further announced that a committee has been formed, tasked with delivering a comprehensive report within the next 45 days. “Our primary objective is not to engage in conflict with existing political parties, but rather to establish a unified platform that genuinely serves the interests of the people of Northeast India,” Sangma clarified.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister emphasized that a key mandate of this newly established committee is to engage and outreach to other political parties, encouraging broader regional cooperation.
Mr. Sangma further underscored a core principle of this new political force: “The protection of land rights for our indigenous communities is a paramount concern.” He also hinted at future consolidation, adding that “Our respective parties are slated to merge and become a singular political entity at an opportune moment.”
Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Manikya articulated the group’s deeper mission. “We are committed to speaking truthfully and with conviction on behalf of our people,” he asserted. “While our individual viewpoints may vary, this movement is not about fostering internal strife. Previous efforts have been made to create such a unified platform. Our resolve is clear: to fight for our rights, not to get entangled in political skirmishes.”
