As a leading technical and research institution in India, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal is planning a significant expansion of its faculty. This move aims to keep pace with its rapidly growing student body and to achieve an optimal student-teacher ratio.
To facilitate this growth, NIT Warangal has formally requested the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to approve a substantial increase in sanctioned positions. The proposal seeks to raise teaching faculty posts from 420 to 606, and non-teaching staff and officer roles from 462 to 667.
In an interview with The Hindu, Director Prof. Bidyadhar Subudhi highlighted that approximately 8,000 students from both India and international backgrounds are currently enrolled in various programs at this esteemed institute.
“Our goal is to improve the student-teacher ratio to an ideal 12:1,” stated Prof. Subudhi. “We’ve already submitted our request to the Ministry of Education and anticipate approval for the full complement of teaching and non-teaching positions within the next six months.”
When Prof. Subudhi assumed his directorship in April 2023, NIT Warangal faced significant staffing shortages, with 108 faculty and 35 non-teaching positions vacant. To tackle this, the institute launched three major faculty recruitment campaigns between 2023 and 2025, successfully hiring 95 new faculty members and promoting 56 existing ones.
“Our recruitment strategy prioritizes candidates with qualifications from IITs or international universities,” Prof. Subudhi explained. “Notably, about 85 of our newest faculty members either possess IIT degrees or have gained valuable experience at foreign institutions.”
Concurrently, efforts to bolster non-teaching staff were intensified through eight distinct recruitment drives and two Departmental Promotion Committees (DPCs). These initiatives covered various avenues including direct recruitment, deputation, internal promotions, and the Modified Assured Career Progression Scheme (MACPS).
Prof. Subudhi further revealed that 23 technical and ministerial positions were recently filled via a specialized recruitment drive overseen by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). In total, 109 appointments and promotions have been successfully completed across officer, technical, and ministerial categories.
