A police constable in Neyveli has been suspended following serious accusations of extortion. The Grade I constable, identified as Poovaraghavan, allegedly demanded a hefty sum of ₹1.30 lakh in cash from a group of college students. The students were reportedly found smoking, and Poovaraghavan threatened to falsely implicate them in drug-related cases if they refused to pay the money.
This alarming incident came to light after complaints were filed against the constable. A subsequent inquiry was conducted, which confirmed the allegations against Poovaraghavan were true. In response to the findings, Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar promptly ordered his immediate suspension.
Authorities also noted that this isn’t Poovaraghavan’s first encounter with legal trouble; he was previously arrested in 2023 in Vriddhachalam for his alleged involvement in a gutka case, indicating a pattern of suspected misconduct.
