Nellore Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajitha Vejendla has issued a stern warning to the public: spreading misinformation and fake content on social media platforms will not be tolerated. She announced that legal proceedings would be initiated against individuals or groups who create posts intended to sow discord or spread false and malicious information, specifically citing sections 353 (2) and (3) of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During a press conference in Nellore on Friday evening, SP Vejendla highlighted the severity of the issue, stating, “We will take decisive action against anyone using social media to defame the Police department with fabricated content. This includes individuals, accounts, or handles that deliberately conceal facts to propagate falsehoods. Furthermore, those leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to generate fake content on sensitive subjects, which could ignite disputes and conflicts, will face even more stringent penalties.”
The District SP urged citizens to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it, emphasizing that failure to do so could lead to legal repercussions. She called for collective cooperation to foster a social media environment characterized by constructive dialogue and honest information exchange.
In addition to the social media directive, SP Vejendla also instructed police officers to conduct comprehensive inspections of firecracker manufacturing units, storage facilities, and retail outlets. This initiative aims to ensure adherence to safety standards, promoting a peaceful and secure Diwali celebration for everyone. She reiterated that firecracker manufacturers and sellers are required to possess valid licenses and strictly comply with all government regulations.
