Nagpur Flyover vs. Balcony: NHAI Cries Encroachment as Viral Video Sparks Debate

Reading Time: 3 min

A recent viral video from Nagpur has thrust an under-construction flyover project into the spotlight, showcasing a bizarre situation where a section of the flyover appears to pass directly through the balcony of a residential building. This unusual sight has sparked widespread discussion about urban development and planning challenges.

In response to the controversy, an official from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) clarified to PTI on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, that the affected balcony is, in fact, built on encroached land. The NHAI has formally requested the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to initiate its removal, setting the stage for a potential demolition.

However, the homeowner offers a different perspective. They assert that while the flyover’s beam passes through their balcony, it does not actually touch the building itself. Furthermore, they argue that this particular section of the balcony is a “no man’s land” with no practical use and poses no immediate safety risk to the structure or its residents.

Footage circulating on various social media platforms vividly captures the section of the Indora-Dighori flyover, currently under construction, appearing to “slice” through the residential property located at Ashok Square in Nagpur, much to the disbelief of viewers.

The owner further elaborated that the flyover road is positioned a significant 14 to 15 feet above the balcony, reiterating that they have no fundamental issues with its presence and that, from their standpoint, there are no safety concerns whatsoever.

The NHAI official firmly stated, “Our flyover is not inside the outer balcony portion. The balcony concerned falls in an encroached area, and we have already written to the NMC to remove the encroachment.”

He also confirmed that the removal of this alleged encroachment is expected to occur in the near future, indicating a firm stance from the highway authority.

Regarding the recent visuals circulating on social media about the Indora–Dighori Flyover at Ashok Chowk, Nagpur, it is clarified that during the construction stage, NHAI identified the encroachment and formally requested @ngpnmc for necessary removal action. NMC has also…

Adding another layer of complexity to the situation, a senior NMC official revealed that the building in question was previously given on lease to the current landowner. Authorities are now undertaking a thorough review of the lease agreement, and appropriate action to vacate the premises is expected to be taken in strict adherence to proper legal procedures.
