Mumbai: Beginning Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Mumbai monorail services operating on the 19.54-kilometer stretch from Chembur to Saat Rasta will be suspended for a period of at least two months. This temporary halt is essential for undertaking significant system upgrades aimed at enhancing reliability and ensuring long-term operational efficiency.
The suspension comes in the wake of several disruptions that have affected the monorail services over the past month, primarily due to technical issues. A notable incident occurred on August 19 during heavy rains, which led to two monorail trains stalling between Mysore Colony and Antop Hill stations, resulting in the rescue of over 1,100 passengers. More recently, on September 15, another monorail train stalled on a curve amidst heavy downpours, requiring the evacuation of 17 passengers.
Officials from Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) stated that the suspension is a necessary measure to integrate new train sets, implement a more advanced signaling system, and refurbish the existing fleet. These upgrades are expected to improve the overall service quality and passenger experience.
