In a harrowing hostage situation at RA Studio in Powai, Mumbai, Assistant Sub-Inspector Amol Waghmare of the Powai police station’s anti-terrorist cell emerged as a hero. His rapid decision-making during a high-stakes rescue operation led to the neutralization of the perpetrator, Rohit Arya, and the safe liberation of 17 children who had been held against their will.
The ordeal began when Rohit Arya, a filmmaker and activist, rented the studio under the guise of auditioning children for a web series. However, once the children arrived with their parents, Arya locked them in on the first floor, creating a terrifying scenario that alerted neighboring residents by 1:45 PM due to the children’s cries.
Arya had secured the studio, reportedly using theft sensors on the doors and threatening to use inflammable chemicals. He had also taken an air gun with him and had divided the children into groups, threatening to harm them. He even recorded a video, stating his intention was to recover unpaid dues, but his actions put the children’s lives at extreme risk.
The police, with the assistance of the fire brigade, executed a precise rescue plan. While negotiators engaged Arya, specialized teams entered the studio from the duct lines and through a breached glass wall. ASI Amol Waghmare, entering from the bathroom area, confronted Arya as he moved towards the police. In a critical moment, Waghmare fired a single shot, hitting Arya in the chest. This split-second decision, taken solely to protect the children, was described by senior officers as the correct course of action, prioritizing the lives of the hostages over apprehending the suspect alive.
Arya was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead. Waghmare has been widely commended for his bravery and quick thinking, which prevented a potential tragedy. Described as a quiet but well-trained officer, Waghmare’s actions underscore the critical training police officers receive in high-pressure decision-making.
