The internet’s most popular YouTuber, MrBeast, known for his elaborate challenges and giveaways, has found himself at the center of a controversy. His latest video, titled “Would You Risk Dying for $500,000 (£372,000)?”, depicts a professional stuntman navigating a series of dangerous-looking scenarios, including escaping a burning building, to win a substantial cash prize.
The video, which has already garnered over 45 million views since its release, has drawn criticism from some online communities who deem it dangerously irresponsible. Concerns were raised that the extreme nature of the stunts could inspire copycat behavior among impressionable viewers.
In response to the outcry, MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, took to social media to reassure his audience. He stated, “I take safety more serious than you could ever imagine.” He further explained that the production team had implemented extensive safety measures, including ventilation systems, a kill switch for fires, and a professional stunt coordinator. A pinned comment on the video also emphasized the presence of a specialized pyro team and fire suppression methods to ensure participant safety.
Despite these assurances, the dramatic visuals have ignited a debate about the ethics and potential dangers of viral content creation. The contestant in the video, Eric, reportedly completed the challenges and won $350,000 (£260,000), with his earnings intended to help his retired parents.
This incident is not the first time MrBeast has faced scrutiny. His business ventures, including “Beast Games” on Amazon, have also been subject to lawsuits alleging contestant exploitation. While Donaldson has largely dismissed these claims as exaggerated, the controversies highlight the ongoing discussion surrounding the responsibilities of major online influencers.
