The area beneath the Mooppanar flyover, located near Chamiers Road, is finally getting the much-needed attention it deserves! After numerous complaints about withered plants and a generally neglected appearance, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced an exciting plan for a complete revitalization. Say goodbye to the old, fading vertical garden, as it will be replaced by vibrant, decorative artificial flower structures designed to bring lasting beauty to the underpass.
This ambitious project, valued at approximately ₹1.25 crore, isn’t just about making things pretty. A Corporation official revealed that the revamp goes beyond aesthetics, focusing on a comprehensive rejuvenation of the entire space. Plans include the construction of a robust reinforced concrete underpass, complete with improved approach roads, efficient drainage systems, and sturdy retaining walls. This holistic approach aims to significantly enhance vehicle movement and overall functionality beneath the flyover.
Imagine a burst of color! The design blueprint showcases stunning decorative flower installations. On the flyover itself, expect to see beautiful motifs of classic red roses, vibrant red hibiscus, and cheerful golden sunflowers. Inside the underpass, the theme continues with delicate white jasmine, bright orange marigold, and more elegant red rose designs, creating a welcoming and visually appealing environment for everyone passing through.
While the Mooppanar flyover gets its upgrade, many are wondering when similar attention will be paid to other key flyovers across the city, such as those on T.T.K. Road and in Royapettah. Sundara Vadivel, a frequent commuter on T.T.K. Road, voiced his concern, noting that the existing vertical garden there has been neglected and is in disarray. He highlighted that a similar setup near Vani Mahal in T. Nagar was removed months ago, emphasizing the urgent need for artificial plants and rejuvenation under these bridges. Such improvements, he argues, are crucial not only for beautification but also to deter issues like waste dumping, open defecation, and late-night loitering, making these public spaces safer and more pleasant for everyone.
Looking ahead, a GCC official confirmed that several other flyovers, including those at Doveton, Kalaivanar, Peters Road, Conronsmith Road, Rangarajapuram, and Vyasarpadi, are slated for comprehensive makeovers next year. These future plans are equally exciting, promising not just new greenery but also advanced solar-powered lighting and enhanced CCTV surveillance for improved public safety. Residents can anticipate thoughtfully designed walking paths, beautiful ornamental plants, comfortable benches, and even dedicated play areas or open-air gyms. The official further detailed the significant budgets allocated for these projects: ₹3.74 crore for the Kalaivanar flyover, ₹3.25 crore for Doveton, and ₹2.53 crore for the Rangarajapuram railway overbridge, signaling a city-wide commitment to transforming urban spaces.
