Veteran actor Mohanlal expressed profound emotion on Tuesday upon receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest cinematic honor. He described the moment as ‘magical and sacred,’ dedicating the prestigious accolade to Malayalam cinema and its discerning audience.
During his acceptance speech, the celebrated actor confessed that he had ‘never dared to dream’ of such an achievement. ‘This isn’t merely a dream come true; it’s far grander,’ he shared. ‘It’s a magical and sacred honor that deepens my sense of gratitude and responsibility.’
Mohanlal humbly noted his distinction as the award’s youngest recipient and only the second from Kerala, following the renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who was honored in 2004.
‘This moment isn’t solely mine; it belongs entirely to the Malayalam cinema fraternity,’ declared the 65-year-old actor. ‘I view this award as a collective homage to our industry’s creativity, spirit, and enduring resilience.’
He further elaborated, ‘Upon hearing the news, I was overwhelmed not just by the honor itself, but by the sheer privilege of being chosen to uphold the legacy of our cinematic tradition. I truly believe this is destiny’s guidance, allowing me to accept this award on behalf of everyone who has shaped Malayalam cinema with their unique vision and artistic brilliance.’
Mohanlal specifically dedicated the award to both the past and present legendary figures of Malayalam cinema, and to the ‘keen and dedicated audience of Kerala.’
Concluding his speech, he quoted Kumaran Asan, the revered Malayalam poet, social reformer, and philosopher: ‘This flower did not merely fall into the dust, it left a life of beauty. Let this moment be a tribute to all those that bloomed with brilliance and faded with grace, leaving behind a fragrance that continues to inspire.’
