Australian captain Mitchell Marsh is eagerly anticipating the upcoming ODI and T20I series against India, stating that playing in “packed out stadiums” with stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning will be an “unforgettable experience” for his squad.
While Australia’s primary attention remains on the Ashes, which begins next month, they are set to compete against India in a series comprising three ODIs and five T20Is. The action kicks off with the first 50-over match in Perth on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
Speaking to the media, Marsh reflected on his previous encounters with Indian stalwarts Rohit and Kohli, acknowledging the unique challenge and honor it is to face them.
“They are undoubtedly legends of the game,” Marsh remarked, specifically praising Virat Kohli as “the greatest chaser ever in this format.” He added, “The incredible ticket sales clearly show how much people want to come and watch them play.”
He reiterated his excitement, saying, “Witnessing the stadiums completely full when we play India is going to be an incredible learning curve for our entire team.”
Marsh predicted that the series against India would likely feature plenty of runs, expecting high-scoring contests.
“I believe it’s going to be a high-scoring affair,” he stated, “but navigating the first 10 overs will be a critical challenge for both sides, potentially deciding the outcome of the matches.”
The captain also confirmed that Matthew Short is slated to bat at number three for Australia in the inaugural match.
Marsh explained the decision, saying, “While we know he typically opens for Victoria and the Strikers, and in T20 leagues globally, we don’t see a significant difference between opening and batting at number three. We are confident in his ability to perform in that position.”
Australia will face the first ODI with a somewhat depleted squad, as key players like Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, and Cameron Green are unavailable. Marsh reassured fans that Green’s injury is “very minor” and that the team is simply taking a cautious approach with his recovery.
“He’s okay, it’s a very, very minor issue,” Marsh confirmed, emphasizing the precautionary measure. “He’s completely fine, but we’re just being careful.”
The series is also expected to feature fresh talent, with Mitchell Owen likely making his debut, and Matt Renshaw also set to earn his first ODI cap.
Regarding the new faces, Marsh stated, “Over the past year, we’ve seen many players get chances in our white-ball teams, and that always brings a lot of excitement. Our focus is on clearly defining their roles, and they will undoubtedly relish the opportunity to play for Australia.”
Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Marsh humorously downplayed any speculation about his own inclusion in Australia’s upcoming Ashes squad.
“I’ve already got tickets for day one and two,” he quipped, “but I haven’t asked my wife yet, so that’s the extent of my planning for the Ashes!”
