The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially ordered a judicial inquiry into the violent incidents that transpired in Leh on September 24. This unfortunate event resulted in the deaths of four civilians and left approximately 90 others injured, as confirmed by a Leh official. The investigation will be led by former Judge Justice B.S. Chauhan, ensuring a thorough examination of the events.
In the aftermath of the unrest, the Ladakh administration implemented several measures to restore peace and order. On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, restrictions on public gatherings of more than four individuals were finally lifted, marking a significant step towards the region’s recovery. Leh is now steadily returning to its routine, with all educational institutions and markets having reopened, and mobile internet services fully restored.
The violence on September 24 stemmed from widespread street protests across Leh town. Demonstrators were primarily advocating for Statehood for Ladakh and the inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. A prominent figure in this agitation was activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was subsequently arrested under the National Security Act on September 26.
