People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government on Sunday, October 12, 2025. She argued that the government’s decision to embrace Taliban-ruled Afghanistan while simultaneously targeting India’s own Muslim citizens is a glaring example of its internal contradictions and hypocrisy.
Mufti’s strong comments come at a pivotal moment, as India moves to enhance its diplomatic ties with Afghanistan. This includes a high-profile visit by Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to India.
In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she asserted, “Under the guise of ‘Love Jihad,’ ‘Land Jihad,’ ‘Vote Jihad,’ and ‘Cow Jihad,’ the BJP has consistently vilified and targeted its own Muslim population. Yet, India, a nation priding itself as the mother of democracy, is now choosing to engage with the Taliban, who are seen by many as proponents of jihad.”
She highlighted that India is providing various forms of assistance to Afghanistan for its reconstruction, even extending educational scholarships to Afghan students.
Mufti further elaborated, “While maintaining strong international relations is undoubtedly strategically important, this situation exposes a stark inconsistency. India’s own Muslim community, which has played a significant role in the nation’s independence, identity, and progress, is facing systemic marginalization.”
She pointed to the BJP’s actions, such as the discontinuation of scholarships for Muslim students and the closure of madrasas, as clear evidence of this alarming double standard.
The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir emphasized that while international diplomacy is crucial, the true strength of a stable and harmonious nation lies in fostering trust, respect, and equality among all its citizens, especially its minority communities. She concluded with a pointed jab, “I hope ‘Bulldozer Baba’ is taking note!” referring to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
