A 36-year-old man in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district was tragically killed by Maoists, who accused him of being a police informer, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Dashru Ram Oyam, was brutally murdered on the night of September 16-17, 2025, in Benchram village, located within the Jangla police station area.
Police reported that a group of Maoists forcibly entered Oyam’s home, dragged him out, and then attacked him with axes, claiming he was providing information to the authorities. Upon receiving news of the murder the following morning, a police team was dispatched. Oyam’s body was sent for post-mortem, and a search operation is now underway to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.
This tragic event brings the total number of lives lost to Maoist violence in the seven districts of the Bastar region, including Bijapur, to 37 this year. Just days prior, on September 1, two other villagers were also killed by Maoists in the neighboring Sukma district. These incidents underscore the ongoing challenges in the region, even as security forces report progress in penetrating former Maoist strongholds.
Adding a complex dimension to the situation, a statement attributed to the outlawed CPI (Maoist) circulated on social media on September 16, announcing a temporary cessation of their armed struggle to facilitate peace negotiations. However, they stipulated that the government must declare a one-month ceasefire and halt security operations for talks to begin. The Chhattisgarh Government is currently in the process of verifying the authenticity of this statement.
