Manipur’s Security Improves Drastically Under President’s Rule, Affirms Former CM Biren

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced that Manipur has experienced a notable improvement in its law and order situation since the implementation of President’s Rule.

Singh shared this update with reporters at Imphal airport upon his return from Delhi, where he and 25 MLAs had spent over a week.

When questioned about the formation of a new state government, Singh clarified that as the BJP operates as a national party, such critical decisions are deliberated and made at the national level.

Prior to his visit, Singh had expressed his intention to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss various pressing state issues, including the establishment of a popular government.

“It’s crucial for everyone to remember that the BJP is a national party, not a regional one. Therefore, decisions aren’t confined to local spheres. We must consult higher authorities, and resolutions are formulated at the national echelon. Our visit wasn’t merely a casual trip,” he stated emphatically.

He further elaborated, “Regardless of the challenges – whether concerning internally displaced persons (IDPs), highway conditions, or the need for a popular government – we are conveying the sentiments of Manipur’s populace to the central leadership. The BJP is a national entity, and Manipur is an integral part of India. Consequently, for any matter, we turn to the Centre. I want those who incessantly criticize to understand that local decisions aren’t always feasible.”

Singh pointed out that President’s Rule is typically enforced when law and order deteriorates, a situation Manipur has faced 11 times, even under majority governments. He reiterated, “Since President’s Rule was enacted, the law and order scenario has demonstrably improved.”

The prominent BJP leader confirmed that the Central government has been fully briefed on the perspectives of Manipur’s citizens regarding the current state of affairs.

“The ball is now in the Centre’s court to make a determination. Representatives from all communities are also engaging in discussions with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. It is imperative that a popular government is eventually established in the state,” he affirmed.

In a direct jab at the Congress, he remarked, “One particular party consistently demanded the government’s removal, and now they advocate for the dissolution of the assembly. We are not inclined to simply yield to that party’s wishes; instead, we will pursue what the people truly desire.”

President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur in February after Singh’s resignation as Chief Minister, following widespread criticism of his administration’s handling of the ethnic clashes between the Meiteis and Kukis.

The devastating violence, which erupted in May 2023, has tragically claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands from their homes.
