Security forces in Manipur have achieved a significant breakthrough, apprehending ten militants from different proscribed groups during a series of coordinated operations conducted over the past few days. This decisive action, confirmed by officials on Saturday, October 4, marks a crucial step towards restoring peace in the region.
Among those arrested by personnel of the Assam Rifles, a senior commander of a banned outfit was captured alongside five other militants deep within the jungles of Churachandpur district. This particular apprehension, part of a daring mission dubbed ‘Operation Songkot’, took place last Wednesday, October 1.
The Assam Rifles proudly stated that ‘Operation Songkot’ successfully led to the capture of S.S. Lt. Jamkhogin Guite Lupho, also known as Pepsi, a prominent leader of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA). This operation has dealt a severe blow to UKNA’s operational capabilities and networks across Churachandpur and Jiribam, underscoring the Assam Rifles’ unwavering dedication to ensuring peace and security in Manipur.
According to Manipur officials, the arrested UKNA commander is allegedly linked to the brutal killing of four individuals from the Meitei community, including a father and son, in Bishnupur district back in January 2024.
Further operations saw police apprehend four more militants on Friday, October 3, in Thoubal and Imphal West districts. These arrests included two active members, one of whom is a woman, from the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (Apunba) in Thoubal Wangkhem. Additionally, a self-proclaimed corporal of the Peoples’ Liberation Army was taken into custody in Ningombam, Imphal West.
A member of the KCP (PWG) was also successfully nabbed from Naoremthong in Imphal West, a police officer confirmed.
These recent arrests come against a backdrop of ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, which has tragically claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023. The clashes have primarily occurred between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo groups residing in the adjoining hills.
