Karnataka is set to welcome a significant boost in medical education with the allocation of 422 additional postgraduate (PG) medical seats in its government colleges for the upcoming 2025–26 academic year.
According to Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, this expansion fulfills a crucial and long-standing demand from the state’s medical community and aspiring students.
During a recent press conference, Minister Patil elaborated on these new developments, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to providing access to high-quality higher education for all.
The newly sanctioned 422 PG seats are distributed across a wide range of specialties, including pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical disciplines. This includes more than 20 departments such as Pediatrics, Anaesthesiology, Forensic Medicine, and Microbiology, ensuring a comprehensive uplift across various medical fields.

Dr. Patil noted the consistent high demand for PG medical courses, stating, “We had initially sought approval for 572 seats, and the approval of 422 is a fantastic outcome. This brings our total PG seats to 2,116, up from 1,694 last year. This is truly a Deepavali gift for our hardworking students and a significant milestone for medical education in Karnataka.”
In related news, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has also given its nod for an additional 450 undergraduate medical seats in the state’s government medical colleges. Furthermore, for the very first time, 15% of these government medical college seats will be specifically reserved for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) candidates, opening new opportunities for global Indian talent.
