In a significant development for medical education and healthcare in Kerala, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially sanctioned 17 brand-new postgraduate (PG) seats for the Government Medical College in Alappuzha. This crucial approval means that students can be admitted to these specialized programs starting from the current academic year, marking a new chapter for the institution.
The influx of these additional PG doctors into various clinical departments is expected to bring a substantial improvement in patient services. It ensures that patients visiting outpatient departments and those admitted to wards will have access to consistent and comprehensive medical care, even during times when senior doctors might be unavailable. This directly translates to better and more readily available treatment for the community.
These newly allotted seats are spread across a range of vital medical disciplines, strengthening key departments within the college. The breakdown of sanctioned seats includes: General Surgery (2), Ophthalmology (3), Orthopaedics (3), Venereology and Dermatology (1), Community Medicine (2), Pathology (1), Transfusion Medicine (1), Anesthesiology (2), General Medicine (1), and Pharmacology (1).
Alappuzha is not alone in benefiting from the NMC’s efforts to bolster medical education. Other esteemed institutions across Kerala have also received approvals for new PG seats, including Government Medical College, Kannur (15 seats); Government Medical College, Ernakulam (15 seats); Government Medical College, Kollam (30 seats); Government Medical College, Kozhikode (2 seats); and the Malabar Cancer Centre (2 seats).
