Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Vijay Wadettiwar has called for an immediate special session of the Maharashtra legislature. His demand, made on Monday, September 29, 2025, is to address the catastrophic flood situation and the extensive damage wrought by relentless heavy rains across the state.
In a formal letter to Governor Acharya Devvrat, Mr. Wadettiwar highlighted the dire emergency unfolding in Marathwada, Vidarbha, and western Maharashtra, where unprecedented rainfall has led to severe flooding and widespread devastation.
Recent reports indicate that over 11,500 people have been evacuated in Marathwada alone, with at least two fatalities confirmed in Dharshiv due to the intense downpour.
The CLP leader strongly urged the government to promptly declare a “wet drought” throughout Maharashtra. This declaration, he argued, is crucial for unlocking a comprehensive financial relief and rehabilitation package desperately needed by the state’s beleaguered farmers and citizens.
Mr. Wadettiwar’s appeal follows a similar demand from former Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) [NCP(SP)] leader Jayant Patil, making him the second opposition figure to urge the Governor for a special legislative session to address the escalating rain crisis.
The Congress leader underscored the profound distress faced by farmers and ordinary citizens, highlighting the irreversible losses inflicted by this natural calamity.
He detailed the devastation: “Standing crops spanning over four lakh hectares have been utterly destroyed, and farmlands in numerous areas have suffered severe erosion, nullifying the immense labor of our farmers. Tragically, livestock has been swept away, countless homes have collapsed, and precious lives have been lost.”
The letter further elaborated on the widespread infrastructure damage, noting, “Electric poles and power lines have been severely compromised, leading to extensive power outages. Vital roads connecting communities have buckled, paralyzing transportation, and contaminated drinking water sources have sparked a grave public health emergency.”
Mr. Wadettiwar emphasized the critical need for urgent policy interventions to guide the state through this crisis. He also reiterated demands for the promised farm loan waiver and swift compensation, contingent on thorough assessments of crop and property losses.
“An in-depth discussion on this pressing issue is paramount,” Mr. Wadettiwar asserted in his letter, “and concrete policy decisions must be made to deliver immediate relief to the people. Therefore, a special session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly must be convened without any further delay.”
This call for action echoes that of senior NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil, who, on Sunday, September 28, 2025, had similarly implored the Governor to schedule a three-day special legislative session. Patil’s request also aimed to thoroughly discuss the extensive damage inflicted by heavy rains and floods throughout Maharashtra.
